Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, which might mean he partners up with one of his idols, Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool is reportedly looking into Araujo ahead of a possible bid in 2022, according to ESPN.
Manchester United is also interested, as Barcelona's contract with the centre back has not been renewed. Barcelona may be forced to sell Araujo, who is out of contract in 2023, for pennies on the dollar. Liverpool is claimed to be 'especially intrigued' in Araujo, with scouts monitoring his progress into 2021.
Given that his contract is coming to an end, certain players may be cut to raise finances, and Araujo is one of them. The fact that Barcelona is no longer a part of the Champions League could further complicate matters.
Barcelona will play in the Europa League for the first time in over 18 years after losing to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
Barcelona's finances are already unstable, let alone without the support of the Champions League.
Given Virgil van Dijk's reputation at Anfield, Araujo could find a move to Liverpool very enticing. Earlier this year, Araujo was asked to select three defensive heroes.
Gerard Pique, Diego Godin, and Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool are Araujo's top three players.
While Liverpool also has Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konate, Araujo may find the prospect to play alongside Van Dijk too tempting.
The Uruguayan is a name to watch in 2022, with Liverpool in in position to raid Barcelona.
